This project showcases a collection of six digital prints that relate to the youth culture of Japan. The Kinki region is a particular focus within these drawings as they were visited by Zarina in the summer of 2003. Key moments, emotions and memories of her trip are set behind radiant photographic backdrops and are delicately sketched in pencil, then inked and glossed as cell paintings.
“I wanted to capture the feeling of fantasy, nostalgia and friendship in this project. It’s so difficult to remember everything that happened while I was in Japan, what I saw and how it felt to be abroad, in a completely alien environment. The layering process reflects my experiences of Japanese society and I wanted to show this by integrating modern techniques with more traditional processes.” |
